In the new episode of The Garage Journal podcast Anna Kuleshova, the chairwoman of the Scientific Publications Ethics Board, a member of the Russian Academy of Science Commission for Counteracting the Falsification of Scientific Research, and Katya Suverina, an editor of The Garage Journal and a guest lecturer at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, are going to discuss how the system of academic journals and the production of scientific knowledge in Russia exist.
This podcast is about the first issue of the journal focusing on the topic ‘Transitory Parerga: Access and Inclusion in Contemporary Art’. We are talking mainly about the texts of the Russian authors and presenting the ‘map’ of the issue.
Dmitry Bezuglov is discussing the conceptual framework of the issue with the authors, three interpretations of ‘inclusion’, the competing notions of ‘diversity’ and ‘care’, the non-obvious arrogance of institutions and the difficult mission of the museum – to speak in an accessible way.
The essay focuses on the critical re-examination of the concept of ‘inclusion’. By drawing upon the works of Nicolas Bourriaud, Claire Bishop, Bruno Latour, and Jacques Rancière, the author challenges both the dichotomy of an involved/uninvolved audience and the classical for the post-colonial discourse focus on the maximum involvement of different groups in creating and consuming art. The main message of this work is that attempts to make art more inclusive or to find the ‘right’ inclusion are highly controversial.
The collection of Garage Museum of Contemporary Art consists of archive materials, rather than artworks.
